One of the top dog foods is by the Wellness brand, with one of the most popular being the company’s Core Natural Grain-Free variety. This particular label comes in a number of flavours, such as Ocean, and Original Turkey and Chicken.

Wellness Core Natural Grain-Free offers a protein rich formula that is free from many typical ingredients aside from grains.

These include soy, meat by-products, and artificial flavours and colours, making this a healthy option for your family dog. This particular formula is best for adults (one year and above), although it can be fed to both large and smaller sized dogs.

Aside from the regular blend, Wellness also offers a similar Reduced Fat recipe. This alternative label offers all the same nutritional value, but without the fat content as the regular label. This reduction in fat is a healthier option for dogs with weight issues, or for owners looking to improve or maintain their pet’s overall wellbeing. The Reduced Fat variety is also recommended to be consumed by dogs of no less than one year.

If you’re looking for a wet food, instead of the regular dry food options, Wellness also sells a  Limited Ingredient formula. This label offers a single protein source, along with the many other benefits of the brand’s dry food options (such as wheat and soy free, and no artificial colours or flavours).

The Limited Ingredient option also comes in four different flavours, including Duck and Oatmeal and Turkey and Potato.

Nature’s Variety

Next on the list of recommended dog foods is by the brand name Nature’s Variety. Under the label Instinct,  Nature’s Variety offers another grain-free option for dogs. Instinct offers healthy ingredients with the benefit of added omega-3 and omega-6, as well as other essential minerals and vitamins.

Each of these is intended to provide balanced nutrition to your household pet, as well as keeping them healthy, overall. The formula is designed to provide higher amounts of protein, while limiting the amount of carbohydrates consumed by your dog.

Instinct also comes in a wet food variety, as well, which provides you with more choices aside from the dry food option. The wet food comes in the same flavours as the dry version, including Duck and Turkey, or Beef and Lamb.

N.B. Best Friends Animal Society has named Instinct as their official ‘pet food partner’. Together they have served over a million meals throughout the organisation’s adoption centre.

Taste of the Wild

Using a variety of unique protein sources, Taste of the Wild’s offerings of Bison and Venison, Boar, or Wildfowl, gives consumers something a little bit different from the ordinary.

Using roasted meats and a grain-free formula that contains sweet potatoes and peas, these formulas are perfect for energetic dogs.

In addition to these healthy ingredients, the formulas have the added bonus of antioxidants which aid in the overall wellbeing of your household pet.

This brand also tries to mimic the diets of ancestral diets, which is said to reduce the incidents related to sensitive stomachs. Taste of the Wild can also be fed to dogs of all ages – from puppies to more senior canines.

Stella and Chewy’s

If you’re looking for a brand that provides a number of healthy options, Stella and Chewy’s is the one. From Dinner Patties to Freeze Dried (raw and cooked options available) options, this brand will provide your pup with the nutrients he or she deserves.

Coming in either chicken or beef varieties, Stella and Chewy’s will provide a nutritional meal to your dog. This brand also offers a product called which comes in either adult of puppy formulas. These offerings can also be used as treats, as the portions can easily be broken into smaller pieces. And, since they’re made from healthy ingredients, you can feel good about using them for this purpose.

Many reviews have indicated that Stella and Chewy’s is a great option for those members with picky taste buds. These formulas are also a great option for dogs with sensitive tummies.

CANIDAE is another brand that offers multiple types of dog food. No matter how old or active your family dog is, they will benefit from one of the brand’s offerings, such as the All Stages label, which is intended for dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes (there’s even a variety for cats and kittens if you happen to be a multi-animal loving family!).

This formula is especially recommended for families with multiple dogs, as you won’t have to purchase multiple types, nor will you have to have separate feeding times to avoid some dogs from eating certain foods. The formula is made with all natural ingredients and high quality meats, such as chicken, lamb and fish. The brand doesn’t use any fillers or artificial flavours or colours.

The CANIDAE brand also offers a Grain Free Pure formula. This particular variety is aimed at dogs with easily upset stomachs. It contains limited ingredients, as well as added vitamins and minerals that help to boost your pooch’s health. It shares many of the same attributes as the All Stages label, but with an emphasis on a more simplistic ingredient list.

A favourite of many veterinarians and nutritionists themselves, Orijen Grain Free formula uses a simple recipe to offer one of several varieties, such as Six Fish, or its Adult Dog blend. While this brand comes highly recommended, it also comes with a higher price point, which many will argue is a “you pay what you get for” scenario.

It does boast using high quality ingredients, which is backed by its award-winning formula – noted as being ‘biologically appropriate’. Biologically appropriate means Orijen chooses the best ingredients for a canine to consume, based on ancestral knowledge.

This is thought to allow your household dog to more easily digest and gain the nutritional requirements from the formula. Formulas are available for dogs of all ages, from puppy through to adult.

Honest Kitchen

The Honest Kitchen is a widely recognised brand known for offering only the finest ingredients in their formulas. Embark is a Human Grade option of dog food, for owners that are concerned about what their pets are eating and where the ingredients are coming from.

These come in a number of flavours, which all indicate free-range or wild-caught protein sources, such as chicken, beef, and fish. The Human Grade option works by using all natural ingredients and minimally processed dehydrated whole foods (so all you have to do is add a bit of water!).

It is suitable for puppies, as well as full grown dogs of all sizes and breeds. It is especially designed for dogs that are active. The brand claims that for every 10lbs of dehydrated food, there is an equivalent of 40lbs of fresh ingredients within.

Plus, because this is a dehydrated food, you will easily be able to spot the food sources that go into this formula, giving you extra reassurance of what you’re feeding your favourite pet. Dehydrated food is also linked to improved digestion, although this is not a guaranteed side-effect of consumption.

Merrick is a popular US brand of dry food. It comes in a variety of labels, such as the Grain Free and Classic formulas. The Grain Free blend offers a real protein source as its first ingredient. Mixed with omega-3s and omega-6s, the choices of lamb, chicken, duck or even buffalo will provide your dog with a number of healthy options.

As the name suggests, it is grain free and the formula itself consists of 70% protein, while fresh produce makes up the remaining 30%. If carbohydrates are a concern for your active, adult puppy, then this is an excellent choice. Please note, if you do have a puppy, there is a formula for younger dogs, as well.

The Classic formula offered by Merrick is good for adult dogs of all breeds. Its packaging boasts that the first five ingredients are easily recognisable – beef, pork, barley, salmon and peas, which makes you feel more confident feeding it to your beloved furry family member.

But aside from that, the Classic blend uses 60% meat and fish ingredients, with the remaining 40% evenly split between fresh vegetables and whole grains. This is further proof that Merrick’s Classic formula is a high-quality offering for any dog! But the fine-dining sounding options such as beef, barley and carrots, or lamb, rice and apple, are only the beginning of what makes this such a good option.

The formulas – seven varieties in all for the Classic label – are all gluten free, high in protein, and with limited carbohydrates. They also provide your pup with just the right amount of dietary fibre and omega-6 to further promote a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

Castor and Pollux

Organix is one of the labels under the Castor and Pollux brand of pet food. They use USDA certified organic ingredients such as chicken, lamb, and salmon to formulate their dry food blend.

The brand is also certified organic through the Oregon Tilth accreditation, and as a verified Non-GMO Project member. It is not, however, grain-free, as many of the other brands that find themselves throughout this list are. But, don’t let that deter you.

Unless your dog has specific issues with grains or a few extra carbohydrates, Organix is still a worthy option. The Organix label also comes in a small breed formula, which is a great healthy option for those with smaller dogs. They can also be found in canned and treat form, giving you even more organic dog food options.

Like a few other brands that you’ll find throughout this list, EVO has a few options for dry dog foods. The first is their regular formula,  but another popular variety is their Small Bites formula. Not unlike Orijen, which was mentioned above, EVO uses an ancestral diet to develop all of its formulas, regardless if it’s the regular or Small Bites variety.

EVO’s regular blend comes in three flavours – chicken, ‘real meat’ (beef, pork, bison and lamb are listed among the types of meat included in this variety), and herring and salmon. No matter which flavour you choose, there are no grains or potatoes found within the recipe, while high-quality meats make up the majority of its contents. The formula indicates that it is highly digestible, which is the brand’s way of noting that this variety of dog food is meant to absorb the most nutrients, while minimising nutritional waste.

The Small Bite label offers a bit of a unique touch. Not only does it come in smaller bite sizes, but it also consists of over 80% protein, with the remaining amount being derived from fruits and vegetables.

They are all in a grain-free blend, and the inclusion of fruits and vegetables will provide your dog with many of the essential nutrients – such as vitamins and minerals – that he or she will require to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. The Small Bites formula comes in the same chicken or real meat varieties as the regular label.

Natural Balance

Synergy is one of Natural Balance’s dog food brands. Made with a variety of interesting, but healthy ingredients, this dry food is designed to provide your family pet with the balanced diet he or she needs, while offering additional benefits to keep him or her happy and healthy. With a formula that can be enjoyed by dogs of all ages (puppies and up to seniors!),

Synergy aids in intestinal health and maintaining optimal blood sugar levels through its use of beet pulp. It uses oatmeal to provide fibre, and flax and brewer’s yeast which boosts immune system health, while at the same time repelling fleas – a problem any dog owner would be happy to avoid.

Aside from those unique ingredients, Natural Balance uses salmon oil to promote healthy skin and a shiny coat using the omega-3s found naturally in this ingredient. No matter what breed you have, this is one dry food option that will give your dog not only a healthy diet, but additional benefits that will help you and your furry friend!

Although it is not recognised as one of the top dog foods on today’s market, it really should be. The  formula by Horizon provides a grain-free option for all life stages, breeds and sizes. One of the reasons this brand appears to be unpopular is the higher price-point, but don’t let that scare you away, by any means.

Horizon selects high quality, natural, GMO-free ingredients to produce the Legacy blend of dry food for dogs. It is grain and potato free and contains over 80% animal protein, making it protein and nutrient rich.

A unique feature of Legacy is that it contains yucca, which helps to prevent or lessen the effects of allergies, sensitive skin, arthritis, and even body odour. It comes in Adult, All Life Stages, and Puppy blends giving you options for all your household pups.

Solid Gold

Made with a high protein fish meal, Solid Gold’s Barking at the Moon is one of the first dog food brands in the United States to produce a product that used high quality, natural ingredients. It is specifically designed for higher performance dogs, although it can be enjoyed by those who aren’t quite as active.

It is intended for adult dogs, so should not be consumed by puppies. However, it does use a grain and gluten free recipe, although it contains all the essential minerals and vitamins that promote healthy diets and overall wellness. Aside from the Barking at the Moon blend, Solid Gold offers a number of other options, including formulas specifically designed for puppies.

IAMS is unquestionably one of the most popular pet food brands, but don’t let that deter you from considering their label. The Healthy Naturals label is only one of many of their offerings, yet unlike many of its other varieties, this one is being widely recognize for its use of natural ingredients.

Healthy Naturals comes in both a grain and grain-free blend, so you will have options depending on your pooch’s preference and dietary needs. Yet, regardless of which you chose, you will not find wheat, soy, or meat by-products within the ingredients.

Healthy Naturals also comes in a ‘weight management’ variety, which is a good option for dogs that are carrying a little excess weight.

Peak Protein is by far the most expensive dog food included in this list. Created by Pinnacle, it uses a holistic formula that consists of natural, grain free ingredients, but which features chicken as the main source of protein. It will also provide your family pet with all the vitamins and minerals required by placing ingredients like sweet potato, quinoa, and even pumpkin within the recipe.

It also includes omega fatty acids which promote healthy immune systems, along with other health-related benefits. It is high in protein, as it was designed for active dogs. It can also be fed to dogs of all sizes, although preferably not for puppies.

Another brand offering a variety of formulas is Hill’s Science Diet . With formulas specifically intended for puppies, larger breeds, and even light adults, this brand has something to offer everyone. They even offer a Sensitive Stomach and Skin formula, which comes in small or regular breed varieties.

To speak about the former first, the regular varieties of Hill’s Science Diet are made with all natural ingredients as well as the added benefit of essential minerals and vitamins, which are placed to improve and maintain your dog’s health. They come in a number of flavours, such as Chicken or Lamb.

Regarding the Sensitive Stomach and Skin variety, the formula has been designed to provide easy digestion as well as a balanced and completely nutritional diet. It is also safely consumed by dogs of all ages and sizes, provided you select the correct variation.

The addition of vitamin E helps your dog maintain a healthy coat, while antioxidants aid in a number of other health-related areas. This formula is also available as a wet food version, which provides additional options for your sensitive pooch.

If you have a puppy, or a not-quite-adult dog, then this might be the best option for you. Specifically formulated for younger stage dogs, Acana offers a Puppy and Junior Dog Dry Mix.

Based out of Canada’s West Coast, the ingredients of this particular label include free-run chicken, farm fresh eggs and vegetables, as well as wild-caught fish. Acana boasts its easy-to-read and recognise ingredients, which gives you, the owner, peace of mind knowing that you’re feeding your loved one nothing but the best!

Like Orijen, Acana’s Puppy and Junior Dog Dry Mix has been awarded as being ‘Biologically Appropriate’. The brand has also won awards for its recipes and use of healthy, fresh ingredients from across Canada. This formula works best for puppies between 9 and 25kgs at maturity.

As one of the most widely recognised pet food brands, it’s no wonder Purina’s Pro Plan has made it onto the list. To ensure your dog has the right diet, Purina has multiple formulas as part of the Pro Plan label.

These include Puppy, Large Breed Adult, and even Sensitive Skin and Stomach (although there are 14 varieties in all!). Regardless of which you select, they are made from high quality ingredients like salmon, chicken or lamb, and designed to offer key nutrients that are meant to boost your dog’s health.

Although each formula is different, many come with wheat, soy and corn-free recipes, while artificial colours and flavours are also frequently avoided. In other words, the Pro Plan label offers something suitable for every dog.

Primal Pet Foods

If a freeze-dried dog food is what you’re after Primal Pet Food’s  Primal Freeze-Dried Nuggets might be a perfect solution for your favourite four-legged family member.

Made with Antibiotic and Hormone free meat, these nuggets are, as well, corn, soy, and wheat/gluten free. The formula behind the nuggets provides naturally derived minerals and vitamins and are a complete diet for dogs of all life stages – no matter the size or breed.

Coming in a variety of flavours – from pork to rabbit, to duck, to chicken – your dog won’t get tired of this brand. All recipes are made from organic ingredients and are considered human grade, meaning they’re safe to consume for both owners and their pets. All you have to do is add water! The brand has also been linked to improving digestion problems, although use of this product does not guarantee this outcome.

Blue Buffalo

Blue Buffalo’s Life Protection Dry Adult Dog Food  is one of the most highly recommended for smaller breeds, although they do offer dog food for all sizes. It is tailored for smaller dogs by having both a higher protein and carbohydrate content, which is geared for those with higher energy and/or activity rates.

It comes in a number of flavours, such as Chicken and Brown Rice, and Chicken and Oatmeal. Made with real ingredients, and a special ‘Super 7’ package, this formula will give your dog all that he or she needs to live a happy and healthy life.

The Super 7 package, which contains antioxidants, and none of the ingredients include soy, corn or meat by-products. Life Protection also avoids artificial flavours and colours, while emphasising the likes of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as the tastiest cuts of meat.

Although a relatively new brand, Victor dog food has a few different selections to choose from. However, the Active Dog and Puppy  variety offers a healthy blend for the very dogs described in its name! Using a grain-free recipe, this dry dog food is made from a blend of three proteins – chicken, beef, and pork.

The brand doesn’t use a lot of fillers, which means the Active Dog and Puppy food isn’t full of carbohydrates, nor will you find any other unwanted fillers or ingredients. What you will notice, though, is the addition of omega-3 and omega-6, which helps to maintain healthy skin and a shiny coat, making your dog not only feel healthy, but look it, as well.

Farmina’s Natural and Delicious dog food is another grain-free option. It comes in three types – puppy, adult, and all stages. They are considered to be a bit more higher-end than most of the other dog foods you will find throughout this list, but the brand makes its product using high quality grain and gluten free ingredients.

They all contain a good source of protein, as well as fibre and a small amount of carbohydrates. The formulas were designed in collaboration with the Animal Nutrition department of the University of Naples, in order to achieve the healthiest recipe for your favourite four-legged family member.

With intriguing choices from Chicken and Pomegranate, Boar and Apple, Lamb and Blueberry, or Fish and Orange, ranging from puppy to adult, you can feel confident about the food you’re giving your dogs.

Made with 12 superfoods, Nutro’s Ultra dry dog food offers quality ingredients to give your family dog the balanced diet he or she deserves.

The superfood blend includes ingredients such as kale, coconut and chia, which complements the flavourful proteins like lamb, chicken, or salmon. You won’t find meat by-products, artificial colours or flavours, or any soy, corn, or wheat in any of Nutro’s dog foods.

Each blend is tailored to all dogs, with specific packages for small, medium, or large breeds – including weight management formulas for small and larger dogs. Ultra also comes in a senior dog blend, making it a healthy option for your older dogs, as well.

Most of these are for adult dogs only, and as a result are not recommended for puppies. However, there are some puppy options, although limited, within this brand’s offerings.

The final selection on our list, an American brand, Fromm, sometimes also known as Fromm Family Pet Foods, is best known for its Four Star dry dog food. Four Star offers a number of flavours, which appear to be more of fine dining human options, than a dog food.

Feed your pup an exquisite meal of Game Bird, Beef Frittata, Chicken À La Veg, Salmon Tunalini, or Lamb and Lentil, amongst others! All options are grain free, so you won’t have to worry about excessive carbohydrates, yet have a high amount of protein, which will keep your pooch happy and healthy.

Fromm remains family owned and operated, with each batch of dog food carefully controlled and prepared in small batches in order to maintain a quality, healthy product. All of the formulas are friendly to dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds. Canned options and dog treats are also available under the Four Star line.

As you can see, there’s a lot of choice, each with their own benefits. No matter which brand you choose, make sure it’s one that is best suited for your particular four-legged friend.

Find a formula that meet his or her size, breed and age requirements, but that is also palatable so as to ensure they will eat it. And, don’t be afraid to experiment; just make sure that you ease off one and onto another in order to prevent an upset stomach, or any number of other diet related issues.
